Floor Tile Vocabulary

Thanks to modern manufacturing technology, both ceramic tile and porcelain tile can simulate stone, cement tiles and even wood. Since ceramic and porcelain tile can be look-alikes to the untrained eye, be sure you understand the performance differences prior to making your purchase and discuss your needs with one of our experts.

Ceramic Floor Tile
Ceramic floor tiles are often a more budget-friendly option than porcelain tile, however, because ceramic tile is fired at lower temperatures than porcelain tile it can be more susceptible to cracking or chipping if a heavy or sharp object impacts the tile surface. While ceramic tiles can range in size from small mosaics on up to 18”x18”, a common size for ceramic tile is 12”x24”. Large ceramic tiles are best suited to shower walls or lower traffic areas such as guest bathroom floors.

Porcelain Floor Tile Porcelain tile manufacturing has become more cost-effective and has made the durability of porcelain tile more attainable. Being fired at a higher temperature than ceramic tile means porcelain is slightly less porous, more moisture resistant and less likely to crack or chip. Porcelain Tile provides excellent durability for high-traffic flooring areas and is often chosen for commercial flooring applications for this reason.
