Common Tile Options for Countertops and Backsplashes:
Ceramic Tile
Ceramic tile is widely utilized for countertops, backsplashes, shower walls, wainscots and fireplace surrounds. Ceramic tile is available as either handmade or machine-made and can mimic the look and feel of natural stone, wood or cement tiles. Because ceramic tile is fired at lower temperatures than porcelain tile it can be more susceptible to moisture and cracking or chipping if a heavy or sharp object impacts the tile surface. Some ceramic tile requires sealing prior to grouting.
Glass Tile
Glass tile makes a wonderful addition to backsplashes, fireplace surrounds, showers or feature walls. Glass tile options range from glossy to frosted and can be solid color or variegated. Some glass products are consistent from tile to tile while others have inherent color and texture variation.
Glazed Brick Tile
Brick visuals provide texture on fireplace surrounds, feature walls and floors, but the thickness of true brick can be a problem for some applications. Glazed brick tile is a perfect solution, simulating the look and texture of real brick in the convenient thickness of ceramic or porcelain tile that can be installed on both walls and floors.
Metal Tile
Metal tiles range from industrial stainless steel to vintage bronze. When designing wet or hot applications such as showers or fireplace surrounds check to make sure the specific product you select is approved to be installed in these areas.
Mosaic Tile
Mosaics are a workhorse in the tile world— they can be used anywhere from floors to backsplashes. Conforming to drainage slopes and providing slip resistance makes mosaics the ideal choice for tile shower pans too. Mosaic tiles are typically mounted on a 12×12 sheet for straightforward installation and can be cut apart to create a decorative feature for your tile backsplash, shower, fireplace or floor.
