After the fun of selecting new carpet, don’t let your new pad become an invisible afterthought!
Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not important. Cushion is a critical component of a successful carpet installation. A quality pad improves daily comfort underfoot and plays a crucial role in supporting the carpet for greater longevity.
By being an informed consumer, you can invest in a quality cushion that is well-matched with your carpet style. We will help you with every step along the way! In the meantime, here are some factors to consider when selecting a pad or cushion:
Comfort
Your personal comfort is a priority! Ask to walk on the pad samples before making your final decision. This will give you a relative comparison from one cushion to another. Keep in mind that after professional carpet installation, the experience will feel different than walking on showroom samples.
Density
Higher density pad provides better support and helps extend the life of your carpet in high traffic areas. However, depending on your personal preferences, a very dense pad might feel less comfortable underfoot.
Thickness
The thickness is simply how tall the pad is. A thicker pad can provide a more luxurious feel, but may not be suitable for some low-profile carpet styles. In general, a thick pad with lower density will create more ‘give’ with each step. A thick pad with higher density will provide more support.
Material
Pad comes in a range of materials such as recycled “rebond” foam, pure urethane foam, rubber, and fiber. Foam and rubber cushion provide good support for most all types of carpet. Low-profile carpet styles pair well with fiber, foam, or rubber pad.
Moisture Resistance
Some cushions will have a moisture barrier layer. Others are moisture-resistant all the way through. Moisture-resistant pad is a good option for rooms that are prone to spills or if you live in a maritime environment. Even with moisture-resistant pad, you still need to clean up spills right away and prevent moisture wicking from underneath.
Soundproofing
You may want to consider a pad with greater acoustical performance properties to reduce noise transmission.
Approved for In-Floor Heating
Choose a carpet pad approved for radiant heat if you have in-floor heating.
Health Concerns
Most cushion is hypoallergenic, and therefore not very likely to cause a reaction. Some carpet pad is available with anti-microbial properties that inhibit mold, mildew and odor-causing bacteria. Bring up any concerns you have about indoor air quality to your project manager.
Manufacturer Warranty
Carpet wear and texture retention warranties are affected by the carpet pad quality. Be sure to select carpet cushion that meets the carpet manufacturer’s requirements to help protect your carpet performance.
